The International Lighting Design Family Tree
It’s often said that the lighting industry is one big family. You can easily move from one branch to another but like many families, it is complicated and over time, the career paths of designers span many companies and also countries.
In 2011, Light Collective scribbled out our personal branch of the Lighting Design Family Tree. Then in 2014, we went on to create a bigger family tree infographic to include other designers in the UK to demonstrate the entangled mesh of practices and people. In 2020, we kicked off something bigger. With the help of LIGMAN, we began the creation of an International Lighting Design Family Tree.
The new version is global; exploring the career paths of the lighting design profession everywhere. We had planned to use this data to create a physical version of the International Lighting Designers Family Tree on the LIGMAN stand at Light + Building 2020 but the world changed and this was unable to happen. See what we would have done with your data at Light + Building:
If you are currently working as a lighting designer, you can still use the link below to share with us the companies you have worked with in your lighting design career.
The project is supported by LIGMAN and arc magazine.
